It was almost humorous reading the various “half full” explanations yesterday of how the landslide Hamas victory was really not so bad, and how we will just have to wait and see.
The victory was, you know, not unexpected (a corrupt and unresponsive ruling party would of course lose, we are now told); the Hamas victory was actually clarifying (the new news is that the Palestinians, having ignored for three years their commitment to dismantle Hamas, are not going to dismantle Hamas); and who knows, the victory may turn out to be moderating (the tiger, having been elected zookeeper, may now be more responsive to calls for him to remove his stripes).
And we all remember that the PLO also originally had a charter that called for the destruction of Israel, but they later negotiated with Israel for a two-state solution. So there is a precedent for all this.
I forget, how did that prior negotiation turn out?
